Situated in the center of Amritsar, the Golden Temple Complex stands as the most revered site for Sikhs. Additionally, it functions as the headquarters for the Shiromani Gurudwara Prabandhak Committee, which is the highest governing authority for the Sikh community.
The Guru ka langar, a large community kitchen situated near the eastern entrance of the temple complex, is an essential destination. It serves complimentary meals to thousands of pilgrims and visitors daily and operates 24 hours a day. The seamless and organized operation of the kitchen reflects the hallmark efficiency of the Sikh community. The Golden Temple complex is accessible from 2 A.M. until nearly midnight, with the optimal visiting times being just before dawn or in the evening. Experiencing the shrine’s stunning illumination alongside the soothing recitation of sacred verses is truly a divine experience.
Situated near the Golden Temple, this 6.5-acre garden is a significant symbol of the Indian struggle for independence from British colonial rule. On April 13, 1919, during the Baisakhi festival, British troops opened fire on a gathering of over 1,000 individuals who were celebrating, resulting in a tragic massacre. This event became a pivotal moment in the Indian quest for freedom. In honor of those who lost their lives in the Jallianwala Bagh massacre, a memorial of national importance has been established.
Durgiana Temple is a prominent Hindu temple located in Amritsar, Punjab. Named after the Goddess Durga, this temple hosts daily rituals in her honor. Wagah is a border town located at the frontier between Pakistan and India. It serves as the sole land crossing point that is consistently accessible to foreigners, tourists, and for the exchange of border trade goods. The Wagah border is renowned for its evening Retreat Ceremony, which occurs just before sunset. This event commences with an impressive parade featuring soldiers from both nations and culminates in the synchronized lowering of the flags of both countries. As dusk approaches, the iron gates at the border are opened, and the flags are lowered in unison. The flags are then folded, and the ceremony concludes with a brisk handshake between the soldiers from each side, followed by the gates being closed once more.
