Patiala

Patiala, one of the most prominent princely states during the British Raj, was established by Baba Ala Singh in 1763. That same year, he initiated the construction of Qila Mubarak, which became the nucleus around which the town of Patiala developed. The rulers of Patiala have left behind a rich heritage of art and architecture, creating some of the region’s most remarkable structures, such as the Moti Bagh Palace and the Sheesh Mahal. The Patialvi culture is highly regarded, blending local folk traditions with Mughal and Rajput influences, particularly evident in its unique Gharana style of music, culinary practices, and exquisite craftsmanship. This cultural legacy contributed significantly to Hindustani classical music, giving rise to the renowned Patiala gharana, which has produced celebrated artists like Ustad Ali Bux and Ustad Bade Ghulam Ali Khan.
Patiala is renowned for its various specialized bazaars that showcase traditional crafts, including juttis (embroidered footwear), parandis (colored braids), and nallas (silken drawstrings). Additionally, the city boasts a rich educational heritage, exemplified by Mohindra College, one of the oldest higher education institutions in northern India.
Travelers to this former royal city will find a wealth of attractions and activities. The stunning forts and palaces, along with museums, places of worship, gardens, and wildlife sanctuaries, create an ideal blend of history, culture, art, and craftsmanship. Furthermore, the historic bazaars of Patiala present numerous culinary delights for food enthusiasts.
